Earth Day is the day designated for appreciating the earth’s environment and raising awareness of the issues that threaten it. The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970 introduced by Senator Gaylord Nelson, a US senator, to bring environmental issues onto the national political agenda. Earth Day is observed in 175 countries, and coordinated by the nonprofit organization Earth Day Network. Earth Day celebrates its 40th birthday this year on April 22nd.

In recognition of Earth Day, here are 5 simple things for the novice greenie to do that not only help save the environment but put money back into your pocket too.

1. Use reusable water bottles

Americans buy more than half a billion bottles of water each week. The issues with bottled water are numerous:

• Petroleum is used to make the bottles;
• About 27% of the bottles are recycled, the other 73% go into the landfills;
• Water, which is available from a tap, is transported from the bottling site to the store and ultimately to our houses causing greenhouse gases along the way;
• The FDA only requires that bottled water is as good as tap water. An NRDC study estimates that 25% of bottled water is really just tap water.

To save money and help the environment, buy a reusable water bottle and fill it up with good old tap water. If you do not trust the tap water, using a filter is still much better than buying bottled water.

2. Use reusable plastic bags

Single use bags in particular, plastic, are very bad for the environment. Not only are they made out from petroleum but the recycling rates are low. WorldWatch Inst. estimates that about 100 Billion are used and discarded in the US alone, at the cost of 12 million barrels of oil. Many of those plastic bags end up in landfills and some flow into the ocean and probably join the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which a floating island of trash estimated at twice the size of Texas where plastic particles are more abundant than plankton.

You can find reusable bags at most retail stores these days. Invest in a couple and you can save 300-700 plastic bags a year.

3. Unplug the Vampires

Many power cords suck up energy even if they are switched off, either because the appliance remains on stand-by waiting to be switched on with a remote control or an adapter, disconnected from the device they are supposed to be charging such as a cell phone or lap top, continues to suck up energy. This is known as vampire or phantom energy and can account for about 10% of your residential energy bill. The EPA estimates that the average US household spends $100 a year powering devices that are off. On a national basis, this standby power accounts for more than $10 billion in annual energy costs.

By using a power strip or unplugging unused appliances or power cords can reduce your energy bill as well as save the environment.

4. Eat like a vegetarian once a week

Farming requires fossil fuels to make fertilizer, run tractors, process and transport food. It takes many calories of grains to make one calorie of meat; animals and manure produce greenhouse gases like methane and nitrous oxide. As a result, producing meat emits more greenhouse gases than growing crops. A 2006 United Nation report revealed that the “livestock sector” generates more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cars, trucks, trains, ships, and planes in the world combined.

Environmental Defense estimates that, “If every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted a vegetarian meal, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads.

5. Buy smart

Consumerism, the constant buying and disposing of stuff, leads to a lot of environmental issues, including extraction, manufacture, packaging, transportation and disposal of goods. Limit purchases to what you really need, after all, Reduce is the first of the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

When you do need to buy something invoke the second R, Reuse, and save money by buying through thrift stores, online through Craigslist or eBay, or have fun visiting yard sales.

In the late 1960′s air pollution clouded our cities with toxic fumes spewed out by cars and factories. Air pollution in New York, Los Angeles and other major cities were linked to disease and death, thus leaving city life barely breathable. Another concern was the large-scale use of pesticides, which were often used in highly populated areas. Additionally large amounts of dead fish were reported on the Great Lakes, and the media carried the news that Lake Erie, one of America’s largest bodies of fresh water, was in its death throes. Ohio had another jolt when Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River, an artery inundated with oil and toxic chemicals, burst into flames by spontaneous combustion.

In addition to the media coverage about the Great Lakes, the media coverage of the massive youth rallies of 1969 – as well as the ghetto riots of 1965 to 1968 – helped to impress on the American public that the United States had become an urban country with complex problems compounded by huge numbers of people. In the 1960′s most talk was about conservation and preservation of our parks and recreational areas. Talk of environment or sustainability did not come into effect until the early 1970′s.

One prominent politician, Gaylord Nelson, then Senator from Wisconsin, had been frustrated throughout the 1960s because only a few of his Congressional colleagues had any interest in environmental issues. On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated. That day left a permanent impact on the politics of America. It forcibly thrust the issue of environmental quality and resources conservation into the political dialogue of the Nation. That was the important objective and achievement of Earth Day. It showed the political and opinion leadership of the country that the people cared, that they were ready for political action, that the politicians had better get ready, too. In short, Earth Day launched the Environmental decade with a bang.

Perhaps the most impressive observance was in New York City, whose mayor, John V. Lindsay, had thrown the full weight of his influence behind Earth Day. For two hours, Fifth Avenue was closed to traffic between 14th Street and 59th Street, bringing midtown Manhattan to a virtual standstill. One innovative group of demonstrator’s grabbed attention by dragging a net filled with dead fish down the thoroughfare, shouting to passersby, “This could be you!” Later in the day, a rally filled Union Square to overflowing as Mayor Lindsay, assisted by celebrities Paul Newman and Ali McGraw, spoke from a raised platform looking out over a sea of smiling faces. In New York, as elsewhere, self-policing demonstrators left surprising little litter in their wake.

Earth Day 1970 made it clear that the public is committed to saving our environment. Although the battle is far from over we have made substantial progress. In the ten years since 1970 much of the basic legislation needed to protect the environment has been enacted into law: the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Water Pollution and Control Act Amendments, the Resource Recovery Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. And, the most important piece of environmental legislation in our history, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed into law on January 1, 1970.

Here is your call to action, celebrate Earth Day 2008 on April 22nd. Plant a tree, reduce green house gasses, or make a commitment to start recycling, these are small steps and yet these steps can do so much for our environment.

Saving earth is now everyone’s responsibility. Most governments have now understood the damages imposed on earth’s resources and are taking significant actions to slow down and eventually stop wasting our natural resources.

Such clear actions to reduce pollution by manufacturers are rising in the form of laws designed to control the emissions of toxic gas. Many countries have now put in place serious programs to encourage individuals and major corporations to recycle as much as possible.

Recycling is now available in many North American cities and city laws are implemented daily to encourage citizens to make recycling a part of their daily lives.

The younger generations are now taught in school about recycling. Often, as a mother, when I am uncertain if an item can be recycled, I can ask my children and they know the answer.

There are two majors forms of recycling major cities offer their citizens: The first category is paper and related products. The second category includes plastic, glass and metal.

Paper products that can be recycled are: paper bags, cereal boxes( you have to remove the inside plastic bag first),shoe boxes, tissue boxes, magazines, books, telephone books, cardboard, egg cartons, sheets of paper, envelopes, etc

Since recycling does come with a price, considering other earth saving options are also mandatory. For example, many of the paper products can be re-used by our children to create crafts. Unsubscribing from magazines you are receiving and not reading can prove to be a time consuming process but will greatly reduce the volume of paper recycled every week. Another simple example is to write on both side of paper cuts in half the amount of paper a person uses and the amount of trash paper a person produces.

On the long run, these simple steps can add-up greatly and reduce the deforestation process that has been going on. The simple step of recycling and intelligently using paper will lower the amount of trees cut in a year worldwide. As a rebound effect, if forests are preserved worldwide, the animals will have a saver and healthier life and humans will greatly benefit from this greener turn.

Such organisms as Greenpeace have long understood the challenges and long-needed changes humans need to take right now in order to stop deforestation and preserve earth’s natural resources.

Everyone should be concerned by the environmental damages we are imposing on earth’s natural resources and take part in the joint effort to make this a better and greener world. Participating in discussion forums involved in finding solutions to earth destruction is everyone’s responsibility. Furthermore, by making sure that environment and earth’s protection is on every government’s agenda is our common responsibility.

Once it was Beautiful to Behold

Long ago the earth was beautiful to behold but as time went by its beauty slowly began disappearing. Throughout the centuries the earth has been crying out to give it rest but its cries have not been heard or listened to. In rebellion it spews out mud killing thousands, its snowy mountains are melting and its waters rising. The winds are blowing ever stronger and tornadoes and hurricanes are destroying and killing many. Earth’s pollution is destroying the ozone layer preventing the protection of living things from harmful radiation of the sun. Tell me now, what hope is there of survival on earth’s planet?

They will Have to Give an Account

If the nations of the earth refuse to help and protect the environment, then, we and the earth are doomed. We know that some nations are trying to help the environment while others are refusing to do their part in its protection. However, I feel that although many are helping to protect the environment it may be too late in stopping the harmful effects that have already been caused; yet, we can stop it worsening.

Technology is good but sometimes it can pollute the environment. Many of us have lung disease such as asthma and if an asthmatic person goes to the city of London and other large cities, asthmatic suffers will often have problems with their breathing. I can confidently say this because I am an asthmatic and whenever I go to the city of London my breathing is affected terribly. So much so, in fact, that when I blow my nose all black stuff comes out of it and often I have asthma attacks. As a result, of these side effects I keep well away from the city of London for my health sake. Now, draw your own conclusion(s) from my personal statement about pollution in cities. However, we all will have to stand before our maker (God) to give an account of the life that we have lived on earth and of the harmful effects that we have caused to the environment and to the human-race, causing suffering, pain, sorrows, chaos and even death.

POEM: They Killed Me!

I told them that I was dying, but they did not listen, I gave them signs, but they took no notice or listened, I cried out but they stopped their ears, they have destroyed many, even me! They have killed me!

Since they will not listen, my doom and theirs is sure, when I was created I was clean and beautiful, now, I am polluted and ugly, I am destroyed and you have done it! They have killed me and did you know it?

This April 22nd marks Earth Day’s 40th anniversary. From its origins as a post Vietnam grassroots demonstration in 1970, through its lukewarm years in the 80′s, to its diverse celebrations in the new millennium, Earth Day marks our evolving relationship with our planet. The idea of protecting the environment has changed over the last 40 years from an occasional topic for study to that of a mainstream attitude permeating lifestyle choices and social action. A look at some present day initiatives in schools across North America brings inspiration and hope for a more sustainable future.

Schools are increasingly modelling stewardship to their students and involving them in the process. More and more schools are earning environmental grants and honorary awards for their gold, silver or bronze levels of environmentalism. The students are running recycling programs, caring for their rooftop gardens, designing energy-efficient buildings, helping to carry out waste audits in their schools, and urging administrators to buy eco-friendly school supplies and cleaning products.

Another way in which schools are going green is to retrofit their buildings to improve indoor air quality, increase energy efficiency, and capture solar energy through solar panels. New schools are often being built green from the ground up. According to the 2006 Greening America’s Schools: Costs and Benefits report, it costs approximately less than 2%, or about $3 per square foot more, to build a green versus traditional school, and payback often occurs within a few years due to energy savings.

And then there’s a whole new breed of schools that have sprung up, integrating environmental education throughout its whole curriculum. A network of Green Charter schools has spread throughout the U.S. with names like: The Growing Up Green School, The Urban Assembly School for Green Careers, and simply, The Green School. The students there go beyond the predictable topics such as global warming, recycling and tree planting, to look at local environmental issues and the impact they can have in society.

Despite a growing awareness through the 60′s of environmental destruction, Senator Gaylord Nelson, who was the brainchild of Earth Day, was surprised by its immediate success in 1970. Approximately 20 million Americans and thousands of colleges and universities participated in coast-to-coast rallies, protests, demonstrations and teach-ins. Senator Nelson has attributed this instant achievement to the grassroots nature of the Day. Earth Day just organizes itself.

This is the legacy that Earth Day has brought to the world stage, and the impetus for the modern grassroots green movement. Wherever schools across North America are on the spectrum of eco-awareness, there can be little doubt that the environment is a universal concern and schools are celebrating Earth Day in a diversity of ways. The next generation will come less to see Earth Day as a day to remember the plight of the earth as it is an opportunity to celebrate their year-long activities and achievements.
