How do carbon emissions negatively affect the environment?

Explain in detail, provide sources please.

I was talking to my friend’s dad, a staunch Republican, who claimed that carbon dioxide emissions do not affect the environment in any way as it is a natural element. That these "earth day" people have no knowledge of science.

It was interesting, but I don’t really believe him. I want to see the facts for myself.

Anyone who eats meat and claims to be an environmentalist is a hypocrite. More carbon emissions are made from the raising of edible animals than all the cars combined. Your Prius does not offset your cheeseburger.

The best answer from this question has all the science you need.

By the way, tell your friend that the EPA recently said that CO2 was a pollutant.

The same way that the Wicked Witch of the West does. Or unicorn poo.

CO2 is plant food. More CO2 is going to benefit us as more plants grow.

How do we benefit from being more covered with ice? (not at all.)

  • Nata T:

The EPA did not say it was a pollutant, 5 non scientists, called the supreme court, said it was because of the definition of pollution is in the law, not what pollution is in reality.

The EPA has only stated that under US law, CO2 must be monitored, but they have not said how much is good and how much is bad. Next the 500 plus folks that have never even picked up a science book will decide how much is good and how much is bad. It’s like going to a witch doctor and asking him how much insulin you need to control your diebetes, they don’t have a clue, all they know is that by calling it bad, they can tax it and then get fat checks in their wallets and districts.

First of all, That republican is dead wrong!!! CO2 doesaffect the earth VERY MUCH! Co2 is called a green house gas wich absorbs heat and light. People of Earth produce a large amount of Co2 every day causing it to stay in our atmosphere wich allows sunlight to come in but not allowing it to come out again for which causes the Earth to warm up at record breaking temperature and cause the poles to melt, the ocean level to rise(maybe causing little islands like Puerto Rico to dissapear under the sea!),glacier retreat,Artic shrinkage(bye bye polar bears if it keeps decreasing in size !)agricultural problems, extreme weather events, and more! As a very sad fact global warming cannot be stopped BUT! can be slowed down if we make a diffference as simple as buying a fluorecent light bulb, turn ligh off, turn the water off while you brush, ride bike, walk, etc. Be a help tp our planet which is our only place to live be healthier, give it a breath of fresh air to our home. PLEASE HELP OUR HOME! (P.s. I know because i got accepted in the first Enviromental "Geen" magnet high school, the name is STATE YYY-1 high school" and im only 14!!!)

If Carbon was emitted, it would be a dark black powder. Like charcoal. What people talk about with global warming is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is nontoxic and is actually used as food by plants. At very high levels, it can dilute the oxygen in the air, but the atmosphere will never be like that.

Every time someone breathe, you expel carbon dioxide. Don’t confuse carbon DIoxide with carbon MONoxide. Carbon monoxide is very toxic and deadly.

It is debatable if carbon dioxide causes global warming, but don’t believe that it is pollution. It is also odorless and colorless. When you see or smell smoke coming out of a car’s exhaust pipe, it is not because of the carbon dioxide.
