They go by weight and a crushed can weighs the same as a can that has not been crushed. its harder to drag that heavy bag of cans from the car to the weigher but it does make you smile a little larger when they bring you your cash for just one bag and its way more than you thought it would be. If returning cans for a refund (eg. Iowa) the cans must NOT be crushed...This is for the purpose of easy counting (cans must be sorted and placed in cardboard case flats at the redemption sites) to collect the refund.
