What's UPS's recycle policy?

I’ve asked my local UPS store several times if they recycle unwanted mail, paper and packaging. The answer is no.

Shouldn’t corporate UPS be helping their outlets with a Recyling Programme & Guidelines? That’s a lot paper we’re talking about…Open to ideas/links/thoughts about recyling junk mail, etc

So in a practical sense, under what circumstances is Recyling OF PAPER OR PLASTIC worthwhile?

By "worthwhile" I mean economically viable, environmentally favorable in the short/medium/long term, and/or beneficial to people/animals. Any statements declaring a positive should take into account its tradeoffs (eg. recycling of plastic saves petroleum, but is that worth the chemical byproducts and energy cost associated with recyling it?). Social arguments along the lines of "it increases awareness of environmental issues" are probably not sufficient since the URL above shows that we can all be aware without necessarily being informed or correct.

Answers focusing on the United States (or even urban California, where I live) are great!

Responses based mostly on opinion or conjecture are discouraged.

Can you make money recyling paper and plastic?

I live in Connecticut. I know you can make money with scrap metal and soda cans. What about papers? Other plastics besides soda bottles? I know I can recycle them but can I make some money by doing it? Say I bring in 500 pounds of paper will I get anything for it? What about 300 pounds of #1 & #2 plastic? Thanks in advance for any information.
