Should we increase research into new areas of climate science?
Question: Should we increase research into new areas of climate science?
It appears that recent earthquakes and Iceland’s volcano are prompting researchers to say it may be prudent to look further into a climate/geological activity connection.

Should this research be supported and if so should it be supported with extra funding or a shift of funding from current existing climate research grants?

Richard Betts, a climate modeller at the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter, said: “This is a new area of academic research with potentially interesting implications. It was previously assumed there was no link at all between climate change and these events, but it is possible to speculate that climate change might make some more likely. If we do get large amounts of climate change in the long term then we might see some impacts.”

Notice Betts is a climate modeler. He shouldn’t pretend to provide expert opinion on things he obviously knows nothing about. We might have a sudden increase in rabid unicorns too. Should we investigate that as well.
quote
“He said there was no evidence that current levels of global warming were influencing events such as last week’s earthquake in China that killed hundreds of people and the volcanic eruption in Iceland that grounded flights across Europe.
unquote
That is correct. There is no evidence. There is more evidence of the unicorns.
quote
Experts say global warming could affect geological hazards such as earthquakes because of the way it can move large amounts of mass around on the Earth’s surface. Melting glaciers and rising sea levels shift the distribution of huge amounts of water, which release and increase pressures through the ground.
unquote
So what. It isn’t like glaciers have never melted before. I am waiting for an alarmists to provide any example of an earthquake greater than 4.0 magnitude caused by isostatic rebound. They won’t come up with it either. I have yet to hear from a reputable geologist that would dare put up with this nonsense but when you drag money through a university such as Berkeley, you never know what might take the hook.
quote
These pressure changes could make ruptures and seismic shifts more likely. Research from Germany suggests that the Earth’s crust can sometimes be so close to failure that tiny changes in surface pressure brought on my heavy rain can trigger quakes. Tropical storms, snowfall and shifting tides have all been linked to shifts in seismic activity.
unquote
Are you sure this isn’t from the National Enquiror. Heavy rains can cause earthquakes. Show me where. Tropical storms and snowfall. These people are a joke. I half suspect the article is from April 1. These people must believe in fairy dust and unicorns.
I won’t go on. They say there is no evidence and of course there is no evidence. I think the money would be better spent vacinating the unicorns.
Note: I have no problem with funds going to study isostatic rebound but it shouldn’t be funded under the false shadow of AGW. Earthquakes in general are far more important to study than minor settling (and that is what isostatic rebound is) from melting ice.

Should the US raise the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency(CAFE) to conserve fuel and reduce air pollution?
Question: Should the US raise the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency(CAFE) to conserve fuel and reduce air pollution?
All American made cars must meet government-mandated levels. Should the US raise these standards to conserve fuel and reduce air pollution, even if the results could result in the loss of American jobs and in turn have a negative impact on our economy?
Answer:
Answer by Jonathan
Not only would jobs be lost if CAFE were raised, but consumer dollars. If Americans wanted cars with higher standards, they would demand such. If CAFE standards were raised, the prices of cars would increase, losing Americans dollars they otherwise would not have spent on the cars.
Should the White House and Congress drop immigration reform and also not focus on climate and energy?
Question: Should the White House and Congress drop immigration reform and also not focus on climate and energy?
Both of these issues are bad issues first immigration should not be reformed, if someone is hear illegal they should be sent back to their country no questions asked. As for climate change that is a scam as well.
Answer:
Answer by augustine
while i do agree climate change is a scam (for me, oh my god, its warm, then in a couple months… its colder! holy crap,) the point behind immigration reform is that we have not been doing it right. when we find an illegal within borders, for some reason our punishment is to put him in jail! which makes him even more of a liability, costing taxpayer’s money.
What should the United States do about climate change?
Question: What should the United States do about climate change?
Should it adopt strong policies to reduce the use of fossil fuels and thus to limit the emissions of greenhouse gases? Or should it encourage more research for now, and hold off on adopting strict requirements until the scientific evidence about climate change and its effects is more certain? Other than requirements or incentives for reducing fossil fuel use, what kinds of policies should the federal or state governments consider? Educated Opinions please! Trying to get the public’s input. Thanks.

Answer by bravozulu
We should implement policies to reduce the price of fuel to give us a competitive advantage over other nations where they listen to fools. The price is probably going to go up because of supply constraints but we don’t need a bunch of delusional self loathing leftists mandating deindustrialization. It is too bad we can’t just make the greens go live in cave. There is no need for the US to do anything. It would be wise to try to encourage alternatives. When you get mindless corrupt leftists in charge, they burn food for energy and don’t save any fossil fuels in the process. You get the idiotic payoff to farmers to use corn for ethanol. The free market is far more efficient. The federal government could do a lot to help if they would ignore what the greens want since it is generally the worst thing for the environment and the people.

watch the patterns, and prepare , stock up on items in case of long long winters or huge storms, like hurricanes and typhoons. I don’t think one can truly prepare for the climate change, it is un predictable and hard to understand. I feel that you must have to adapt to the current conditions and just prepare for what ever earth throws are way.
When looking at the current climate, how many years worth of data should be considered?
Question: When looking at the current climate, how many years worth of data should be considered?
I’m doing a project on global warming and how it has affected temperatures across the U.K. I have found a significant rise especially in the last twenty years and even more so in the last five. I am wanting to make tables of what the current climate is like in different parts of the U.K. I want a set of data long enough to give a decent sample, but not so long that I end up including data which is no longer valid. I’ve found this difficult because temperatures are rising so quickly.
Answer:
Answer by Mang109
Really when looking at Climate change and AGW theory one needs to look at as much data as possible
However if you are having to use raw data for your project, I would suggest you try to do 100 maybe even 200 years. The UK has kept detailed records since 1814 or 1815 ( cant remember which) so you should be able to.
Also include the Graphs over the longer history of the entire world , provided by Ice core data , just to show the trends though.
Good luck

A) Four changing seasons which can result in ice storms and measureable snow in the winter.
B) Face that house south. The entry to a north facing house will stay frozen all winter long.

Should we start taxing exercise as part of a comprehensive plan to combat climate change?
Question: Should we start taxing exercise as part of a comprehensive plan to combat climate change?
If anthropogenic carbon emissions are indeed the primary cause of climate change then shouldn’t exercise be taxed as well. Think about it, when people exercise they generally respire at an increased rate which means that that person is exhaling more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than normal.
Answer:
Answer by Freedom Democrat
No. A real comprehensive clean energy plan would stimulate the economy and fix our addiction to dirty fuels at same time.
