The cause is primarily pollution from the use of coal as a source of energy in China.

Coal is one of the dirtiest most polluting forms of energy that we have.

Unfortunately China does not have a realistic alternative to the use of coal.

The only possible alternative that would have a chance of working is to replace the coal fired power plants with nuclear power plants.

However given the problems with nuclear power plants that is not an option.

Most of the pollution is from industry and there are not too many things that can be done in the short run to reduce the pollution without reducing the factory outputs.

The only other option is to cut back the economy.

China is not willing to cut back its economy.

Realistically thee is really nothing that China can do that is acceptable to the Chinese people to cut back on the pollution from coal fired power plants.

U need the whole country to participate to reduce the pollution in China.
Only a small population willing to reduce pollution is very very difficult .

  • CKLiew:

stop population growth and pollution will automatically reduce.

Stop outsourcing all our manufacturing to China.
Corporations save money by circumventing pollution standards when outsourcing to China.
China is back in the ’60′s as far as pollution control and will increase it’s pollution as we continue to take advantage of the lax labor laws there.

Maybe the heads of the nations should suggest to China that a summit beheld to get a dialogue going one how China would get on board with reducing pollution. There are a lot of great minds worldwide that could share environmental solutions. Of course this all depends on whether or not China would be receptive to such a forum and then follow through.

I guess the next step would be that if it is affecting the global climate that countries would have to stop trading with them if they didn’t start making changes.

A better question is whether or not China wants the developed world to tell them to reduce emissions, which will immediately reduce their rate of economic development. You can imagine that they might not like wealthy nations telling them to voluntarily reduce their income. This is why the world hates the US. We already benefited from our industrial revolution, and want to prevent the rest of the world from benefiting from theirs.

…or, you can stop buying crap at Wal-Mart and the other big-box stores.

First of all every one has to participate. Government and the people. Let’s say the population of china is 1 billion people, and 70% of this population own motor vehicles. That will give you 700 million vehicle driving in the cities and towns every day. Now, the President of china has to give one dollar to each person for not driving their car for 1 month. This will reduce the pollution.

Stop buying chinese made crap. Those are our companies in China making junk to send back to the US. Over there, they have cheap labor and few pollution laws. Buy American made junk instead.
