What is the nano techology that uses mechincal energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen?

What is the nano techology that uses mechincal energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen? I was wondering about this since the nano is using its own energy and doesnt this make infinite hydrogen because the water is split without using the energy from the joining of hydrogen and oxygen. Couldnt they use this in cars producing a eco-friendly "infinite" engine without a need to replace hydrogen for a long long time if even needed?

  • John W:

It’s artificial photosynthesis with carbon nanotubes. Ultimately, the goal is to chemically store solar energy as hydrocarbons not as hydrogen as hydrogen has too many problems to be a useful energy container.

It would be similar to mounting solar panels on a car and does not represent an infinite source of energy.
